Letter signed by the former supreme commander of the Janissaries of Cairo, Michel Abdelal Aga, dated September 2, 1806 in Marseille. Written in brown ink on a sheet of laid, watermarked paper, with the presence of a damp oriental seal in black ink. This letter is written in a French that is phonetic to a very pronounced degree by its interpreter Giacomo, and signed in the hand of the oriental dignitary Abd el Al, Aga of the Janissaries. There he virulently denounces the actions of a certain [Antoun Amaovi], whom he calls an “enemy of human repose” (ennemi du repos humain). He asks his correspondent to transmit “la presente paitition au ministre de la pollice” (the present petition to the Minister of Police). Conscious of his repeated solicitations, the Aga apologizes, stating that he can rely only on a “seul ami fidèle.” He ends his missive by sending his greetings, as well as those of his wife and his interpreter, Giacomo. - Dimensions: 20.1 x 25.2 cm - Condition: Very good condition. See photos for more details. - Number of pages: 1 page Former supreme commander of the Janissaries of Cairo, Michel Abdelal submitted to the French generals at the end of the Campaign in Egypt and fled Ottoman reprisals by joining France in 1801. Napoleon Bonaparte then integrates him as an officer within the prestigious Mamelukes Squadron of the Imperial Guard. Based at the Marseille military depot and converted to Catholicism, he uses his powerful connections to protect and administer the community of Oriental refugees. A true symbol of this historical integration, his son would later shine brilliantly as a cavalry general under the Second Empire. Careful shipment in a rigid, waterproof carton.
