Michael Joseph (1941-) - Sailor Boys Authentic Darkroom Print

Sailor Boys – A Portrait in Period Dress, London, 1970s Michael Joseph | Original Vintage Photograph | Signed Two boys in sailor suits stand beside an ornate pedestal, with a woman in a broad-brimmed hat behind them. Their serious expressions and carefully arranged poses give this theatrical portrait the charm of an old family photograph, recreated through Michael Joseph’s eye. Just as accomplished with a small, solemn trio as with a crowd of gloriously rowdy pop stars, Michael brings each figure into a beautifully balanced composition - with personality quietly peeping through the formality. The original commission remains unidentified, adding a little mystery to this intriguing image from his archive. The dark border bears handwritten annotations reading “Sailor Boys” and “London 1970s”, alongside Michael Joseph’s signature. An unusual and characterful example of his gift for directing people, whatever the size - or temperament _ of the group. Condition - Please Read Carefully - this is an original vintage photograph dating from the 1970s, now approximately 50 years old, and naturally showing some signs of its age. The original mount has sustained a bit of damage bottom right, and there may be minor superficial discolouration, marks or imperfections consistent with its age and storage history, as illustrated in the accompanying photographs (for example there is a little bit of glue under the word sailor). These signs of age are part of the history and authenticity of this vintage piece, which is offered in its existing condition, rather than as a newly produced or restored print. Please examine ALL the accompanying photographs carefully before bidding, particularly those showing the condition of the mount and any visible imperfections. The photographs form an important part of the condition description. A charming and unusual survivor from Michael Joseph's photographic archive, retaining the character, history and individuality of an original vintage work.
