Merovingian Bronze, Gold bronze of the high command or aristocracy - 38 mm

Merovingian bronze brooch with pierced geometric decoration and stylized terminal ends – The gilded finish and the fineness of the ataurique engravings indicate that it belonged to the clothing or harness of an aristocrat or high-ranking military officer of Late Antiquity / Early Middle Ages. Culture: Merovingian Proposed dating: Imperial period, 6th–8th centuries A.D. Material: Cast bronze. An interesting and singular ornamental bronze mounting, with an elegant symmetric composition and carefully wrought geometric decoration, possibly belonging to an ancient leather strap or harness fitting from the Merovingian era. The piece presents a body with architectural outline, enriched by relief moldings, two circular perforations arranged symmetrically, and a central motif of concentric circles framed by angular lines. Its upper part is capped by an elaborate composition of triangular elements and diverging moldings, while the lower end features three projections, with the two lateral ones gracefully curved outward. The contrast between the dark bronze background and the reliefs in a earthy golden tone stands out, accentuating the richness of the ornamentation and giving a notable aesthetic presence. Condition: Good visual and structural integrity apparent. Preserves its frontal decoration, both perforations, and the posterior loop. Shows surface wear and earthy deposits. An attractive example of antique metalwork ornamentation, especially interesting for the complexity of its geometric design, the harmony of its composition, and its singular fixing system.
