Medieval to Post-Medieval Group of Seven Bronze Cross Pendants Circa 16th-19th century AD A remarkable group of seven cast bronze cross pendants, each with an integral suspension loop and decorated with various forms of Christian ornament. The crosses have rectangular, rounded or pointed arms, with some incorporating expanded terminals and openwork elements. The cross is the principal symbol of Christianity, representing the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and the Christian belief in his resurrection and the redemption of humanity. Although crucifixion was a Roman method of execution, Christians transformed its instrument into an emblem of salvation and divine sacrifice. The cross became increasingly prominent in Christian art and worship during the 4th century AD, particularly following the conversion of Constantine the Great and the growing public acceptance of Christianity within the Roman Empire. Size: 4.5cm x 2.5cm x 0.5cm (set of 7) Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
