Background Information: Pilgrim badges were small devotional objects acquired by medieval travellers at pilgrimage destinations and worn on clothing, hats or bags. This circular example depicts a male head in relief within an openwork field, surrounded by a border bearing a partially preserved legend or inscription. Without a securely identified inscription or specific iconographic attribute, the identity of the central figure and the pilgrimage centre with which the badge was associated cannot be established with certainty. Badges of this type belonged to the extensive material culture of late-medieval pilgrimage. Alongside ampullae and other devotional souvenirs, they provided pilgrims with a portable reminder of their journey and association with a particular shrine or cult. They could also publicly identify the wearer as someone who had undertaken a pilgrimage. Pewter and related lead-tin alloys were particularly suitable for these objects. They could be cast in moulds, enabling specialised workshops associated with pilgrimage centres to produce relatively large numbers of detailed badges at modest cost. Openwork designs, raised figures, inscriptions and decorative borders demonstrate the sophisticated mould-making traditions employed for objects intended for broad circulation. During the 15th century, pilgrimage routes connected religious centres, towns and communities throughout the Low Countries and wider medieval Europe. Pilgrims carried badges home with them, allowing these small objects to circulate far beyond the places where they were originally produced. This compact badge forms a tangible connection to late-medieval devotional practice and to the individuals for whom pilgrimage was both a religious journey and a significant part of lived experience.
