It served to protect the leather from fraying, added weight so the belt hung nicely, and made it easier to thread the belt through the buckle. Material: Cast copper alloy (bronze or brass). Design: An elongated, tapering form that at the top often features openwork windows or decorative openings. Decoration: The surface is adorned with late medieval relief motifs, in this case a stylized floral- or geometric pattern.
