MD-73. Maryland. July 26, 1775. $1 1/3. PCGS Banknote Fine 12 Details. Edge Splits and Tears; Mounting Remnants on Back. No. 7089. Signed by Brice and Duckett. Elaborate vignette of Britannia receiving a petition of the Continental Congress from a female figure representing America. America is seen here trampling on a scroll marked "Slavery" and holding a Liberty Cap in front of American troops carrying the flag of liberty at right. At left, George III is trampling on the Magna Carta and setting fire to an American city under attack by a British fleet. Side border cuts show "AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN" and "PRO ARIS ET FOCIS," the latter translates to "For Altars and the Hearth." Looking to the back design one observe another very elaborate vignette where America and Britannia achieve peace while a ribbon emblazoned "PAX TRIUMPHIS POTIOR" which translates to "Peace is Preferable to Victory" can be observed above the bottom margin. The emission of July 26, 1775 was part of £100,000 authorized by the Maryland Convention to promote the manufacture of gunpowder per available reference material and examples from this series are always a solid four-figure proposition with tonight's handsome offering no exception among its peers. PCGS Banknote comments "Edge and Internal Damage, Mounting Remnants." Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500. Click here for certification details from PCGS Banknote.
