This pair of bookends "Mouflons" by Max Le Verrier (1891-1973) is an emblematic work of the Art Deco era. It is a perfect example of the artist's style, who had become a master in animal sculpture and metalworking. Here are some key points to better understand this work: 1. Style and Aesthetics The Mouflon stands out with stylized and geometric lines, typical of the 1920s and 1930s. Max Le Verrier did not seek absolute realism, but rather to capture the power and nobility of the animal. The spiraled horns are often the central element, creating a very strong visual rhythm. 2. The Material: Le Verrier's Art Cast Unlike many of his contemporaries who used exclusively bronze (very costly), Le Verrier created his own alloy of art metal (often wrongly referred to as régule, but of much higher quality). • The Patina: It is not a simple coating, but a true chemical reaction that gives this velvety texture 3. The Production Le Verrier owned his own foundry in Paris. The Mouflons are mounted on black marble bases that enhance the luxurious and architectural aspect of the piece. Note 2 slight nicks on one base (see photos). The Signature: It is engraved in the cast: "M. Le Verrier" on the base. Max Le Verrier received a gold medal at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts of 1925, the very event that gave the style its name, "Art Deco". Excellent overall condition of the piece and its patina. Fast and careful shipping for this rare set of exceptional quality.
