An important monograph by Reinhard Spieler devoted to Max Beckmann, tracing the evolution of his work and, in particular, the symbolic and mythological dimensions of his painting. The study focuses in particular on the large triptychs, the self-portraits, and the imagery developed by Beckmann within the political and cultural context of interwar Germany. Abundant illustrations accompanied by extensive critical notes. A good copy, with a few slight signs of wear on the cover.
