MAURICE COURANT (1847-1926) “Quai Chanzy and the Port of Boulogne-sur-Mer” Oil on canvas, Signed and dated 1911 at the lower left, Beautiful and grand work by the Havrais painter Maurice Courant, depicting Quai Chanzy and the bustling harbor of Boulogne-sur-Mer populated with numerous figures. In the background, one can discern the Quai Gambetta, an overall view of the old town, and the Saint-Pierre church. The painting is treated in small strokes within color harmonies dominated by blues, grays, and browns. This work is a fine testament to the animation of Boulogne-sur-Mer’s port at the beginning of the 20th century. Our work was very surely exhibited at the Salon of 1911, under the title “Le quai maritime,” where the artist presented that year a set of paintings and watercolors of the town of Boulogne-sur-Mer. A pupil of Ernest Meissonnier (1815-1891), Maurice Courant quickly breaks away from his master’s influence and from the academic style to specialize in seascapes, notably depicting the Opal Coast and the Breton Coast. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1868 and became known for several canvases: “Bassin du Roy,” “Barques de pêche à marée basse,” etc. His work was praised by critics and rewarded with a silver medal at the World Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900 in Paris. From 1906 to 1913, he undertook several trips to England, the Netherlands, and Belgium. Maurice Courant paints essentially on site, as attested by the artist’s obituary published in Le Petit Havre. The artist succeeds in capturing the effects of light in his compositions and in faithfully conveying the atmosphere of his cloudy skies with a palette often dominated by blues, grays, and browns. He also pays particular attention to the numerous details in his compositions. Note: A few craquelures (cracks) are present in the sky but do not affect the work.
