MASK Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, Eastern Highlands 20th century Gourd, human hair, Job’s tears, bark, resin, and clay H. 25 cm – W. 20 cm 5,000/6,000 € Provenance: - Collected by Olivier Meric de Bellefon during an expedition in the 1990s - Olivier Meric de Bellefon Collection, Limoges, France - On long-term loan and deposit from de Bellefon to the Museum of African and Oceanic Arts in Paris for a planned purchase and exhibition in 1994, which did not take place. - Jean Roudillon Collection, Paris. Deposit inventory number D.94.1.1., from the Museum of African and Oceanic Arts, Paris, with white paint on the reverse. The gourd masks of the Highlands, located east of the great central avenue of New Guinea, are relatively unknown and have been little studied. It appears that some of these fragile and often ephemeral works are associated with the healing of certain illnesses.
