Tutte le aste / Monete & Banconote / MARYLAND. Baltimore. HOUCK'S / PANACEA / BALTIMORE in relief within

MARYLAND. Baltimore. HOUCK'S / PANACEA / BALTIMORE in relief within an oblong depression on the obverse of a Spanish colonial 1786-Mo 2 reales. Brunk H-779, HT-143, Low-400. Host coin Very Good. Deep charcoal-olive surfaces, both sides a tad glossy in texture, but otherwise nicely composed for a Spanish colonial 2 reales that obviously served as a workhorse in commerce for many years. The counterstamp is nearly impressed on Charles III's bust, near bottom, and nearly horizontal to the date. A few of the letters in PANACEA are a bit soft from wear, but the text is fully legible. This counterstamp dates to 1836, and is attributed to this well known Baltimore, Maryland firm, with at least 90 examples reported on Draped Bust and Capped Bust half dollars of various dates. Spanish colonial 2 reales as host coins are much rarer, meriting a Rarity-7 rating in the 2004 Rulau reference on U.S. tokens.
