Martin Conway - L’alpinisme au spitsberg - 1901

the book is a French-language adaptation and summary of the bold expeditions of the British explorer Sir William Martin Conway. He led in 1896 and 1897 the very first successful crossing of the interior of Spitsbergen Island. The French connection: The renowned French geographer and polar researcher Charles Rabot (whose name is still associated with the Rabot Glacier on Spitsbergen) translated Conway's texts, shortened them, and provided scientific context for the French audience. Visual elements: The book is richly illustrated with 58 images based on early expedition photography. The engraving in the recognizable oval on your title page shows a small polar boat (a dinghy or kayak) with expedition members, typical of the maritime prelude to such early Arctic journeys. Publisher: Printed by the prestigious French publisher Librairie Hachette et Cie in Paris, which at the time was known for its high-quality travel and exploration books. [
