Marie Laurencin, born October 31, 1883 in the 10th arrondissement of Paris and died June 8, 1956 in the 7th arrondissement of Paris, is a French figurative painter, but also an engraver and an illustrator, closely associated with the birth of modern art and the School of Paris. A decorator of neoclassical ballets aiming, just like her admirer Max Jacob, to transgress artistic genres, she was also a writer of epistolary works with disconcerting whimsy and she composed poems in free verse, inseparable, in the course of her creative process, from the pictorial expression of the fantastical scenes she depicts.
