Tutte le aste / Altro / Marie-Christine Treinen (1930-2003) - Vase - Superb and...

Magnificent and very rare vase of notable height (22 cm), ceramic with an expressionist and colorful graphic, characteristic of the work of Marie-Christine Treinen (1933-2003), a renowned ceramist who marked the history of Vallauris (notably having passed through the Atelier Cérenne before founding her own workshop on Rue Sicard). For a Marie-Christine Treinen vase, this 22 cm dimension is a very beautiful size for her creations, which are often smaller or frequently decorative accessories. It also features a very rich and colorful decor. This is a vase not to be missed, sure to delight Vallauris object collectors and fans of Marie-Christine Treinen, who has a strong presence and is of particular interest to any ceramic and interior decoration enthusiast. Description of the vase: * Shape: Elegant, timeless baluster silhouette. The vase has a stable base that flares generously into a plump, full belly, then tightens subtly to form a straight, short cylindrical neck. * Material and Technique: Made of clay/earthenware, the decoration is entirely realized according to the demanding technique of incised or engraved decoration with engobe (sgraffito style). The brown earth contour lines separate color areas in light relief, creating a tactile texture and a beautiful visual depth. * Colors and Decor: The vase is dressed in an abstract, lush, and dynamic universe, typical of the Cubist and biomorphic influence of the mid-20th century. Geometric motifs (squares, triangles) on the neck respond to an organic and moving graphic on the belly. The color palette is vibrant and luminous: touches of bright red, deep ultramarine blue, sunflower yellow, and emerald green, all contrasted by a pale beige/rosy background with slightly satin reflections. * Decorative potential: With its appearance of a genuine 'Arty' sculpture, this vase with strong visual personality blends beautifully into a Mid-Century Modern interior (placed on a Teak sideboard) or in a Boho Chic style decor. Thanks to its vibrant colors and expressionist motifs, it will also serve as a bold centerpiece in a contemporary or minimalist interior, instantly bringing warmth, artisanal authenticity, and a striking color contrast to a clean, simple piece of furniture. The 6th photo will help you imagine it in a contemporary interior. Artist biography: Vallauris, after the war, was an important center for art ceramics: many artists, potters, and pottery/glaze workshops were active there. The Atelier Cérenne, among others, was a key player in this effervescence. This postwar Vallauris ceramic workshop employed many decorative painters. Founded in late 1943 by Charles René Neveux, Atelier Cérenne produced utilitarian and decorative ceramics of high quality, very diverse due to the passage of numerous decorating painters. Sold in 1958, the workshop operated until 1984. Today, the building is listed as a historic monument. Marie-Christine Treinen was one of the most inventive decorators at the Atelier Cérenne, where she worked from 1945 to 1960, then opened her own workshop on Rue Sicard, in the former premises of Jacques Innocenti. During the 1990s, she became a regular at La Bergerie, considered one of the prettiest Vallauris shops, where she spent long moments looking at the objects on display. Sometimes she would buy a necklace of ceramic beads, which she particularly loved. She was the sister of Françoise Claustre, who died in 2006 and was known for having been hostage in Chad for 33 months from 1974 to 1977. Born in 1930, she died on October 27, 2003. Marie-Christine Treinen was a renowned ceramist active in Vallauris, mainly in the mid-20th century. She is known for her unique designs, often characterized by decorations on ceramic pieces such as bowls and vases. Her work, primarily created in the 1950s and 1960s, continues to be increasingly sought after by mid-century ceramic enthusiasts. Her very recognizable decorative style is characteristic: vivid polychrome enamels, abstract or stylized decoration, often on a light or colorful background with vegetal or abstract motifs. Her works are characterized by strong colors: yellows, oranges, reds, greens, blues, pinks, and sometimes black with engobe or light background plus glazed decoration. The motifs are abstract, sometimes inspired (or compared) to a Miró/Chadwick style — a comparison illustrating the free spirit of her forms. The decor is often rich, free, with stylized shapes of imaginary animals or plants. Marie-Christine Treinen is regarded as a figure of craft ceramics in Vallauris in the postwar period. The artistic and artisanal environment of Vallauris fostered innovation in forms, glazes, and decoration, reflected in her free and colorful style. Her works continue to be known, studied, and sought after by collectors.
