Iconic photograph of the Chrysler Building, in New York, by Margaret Bourke-White Early in her career, Margaret Bourke-White moved to New York to become a commercial photographer and staff photographer for Fortune magazine in 1929. One of her early commissions was to photograph the Chrysler Building as it rose, briefly becoming New York's tallest structure. When workers began to build the building's modern gargoyles on the sixty-first floor, Bourke-White decided: "Here would be my new studio... I loved the view so much that she would often climb onto the gargoyles, which projected over 240 meters down to the street below, to photograph the changing moods of the city". Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) One of the great photojournalists of the 20th century and one of the mothers of photojournalism, Margaret Bourke-White was the first American female war correspondent (and the first woman allowed to work in combat zones during World War II) and the first woman photographer to work for Life magazine, led by Henry Luce. One of her photographs was on the cover of the first issue, on November 23, 1936.
