Marco Palumbo (XX) - Icona Sacra Madre della tenerezza

Icon “Mother of Tenderness II” – Egg tempera on wood panel (25x25 cm) Lotto Description: Title of the Work: Mother of Tenderness II Dimensions: 25 x 25 cm Technique: Egg tempera and gold leaf on wooden panel according to the ancient Byzantine tradition Origin / Author: Iconographer Master of Monte Sant’Angelo (FG) Style-Artist Description: The work portrays the Mother of Tenderness II (Eleusa). While rooted in the most authentic iconographic tradition, this panel features a personal and contemporary reinterpretation by the artist. The icon moves away from rigid schematicity to embrace a more painterly and fluid style, where the lines of the faces and the shading of the skin acquire softness and intimate expressiveness, almost portrait-like, without ever losing the solemn spiritual language of Byzantine art. Technique and Formation of the Author: The work was executed entirely by hand following the rigorous and ancient technique of egg tempera, applied on a wooden panel. The author, operating in Monte Sant’Angelo, earned the title of iconographer at the Abbey of Pulsano, where he learned from the Pulsano monks the millennium-old secrets of Byzantine painting, transmitted from generation to generation. Sacredness and Blessing: This icon is not to be understood as a simple decorative element or ornament, but as a true "window onto the divine," a tool for contemplation and prayer. The work has already been blessed at the Sacred Celestial Cave of Monte Sant’Angelo, the famous Sanctuary of Saint Michael the Archangel, unique in the world for never having been consecrated by human hands, but consecrated directly by God. Theological Symbolism and Meaning of Colors: In Christian theology and doctrine of sacred images, every color and detail holds a deep meaning: Gold of the background: Represents the inaccessible Light of God, eternity, and the divine dimension surrounding the sacred figures. Blue/Veil of the Virgin: Symbol of transcendence, celestial mystery, and spiritual royalty; indicates that Mary is enveloped by divine grace. Red/Purple of the garment: Symbol of divine love, royalty, and sacrifice. The contrast between the outer blue and the inner red symbolizes Mary’s humanity covered by the divine. The Child’s Tunic of Illumination: The bright, clear garment of Jesus symbolizes the Pure Light of the Resurrected, wisdom, and salvation brought into the world. Touch of the Faces (Tenderness): The child’s cheek resting against the Mother’s cheek represents the intimate and profound union between Divinity and Humanity. The framed photo is for illustrative purposes only.
