Very beautiful photograph of Jacques Brel (1929-1978), Belgian singer-songwriter and actor, one of the greatest figures of Francophone song. Renowned for Ne me quitte pas, Amsterdam and La Valse à mille temps, he marked several generations by the power of his lyrics and the intensity of his performances. Signed and numbered 2/14 on the back. Marcel Thomas is a French photographer with an atypical career. It was after World War II that he settled in Paris, working in the clothing trade. From 1947 to 1990, thanks to the help of doorman friends in the great Parisian hotels, he photographed, with their consent, hundreds of French and international stars. He would approach them with a friend who would request an autograph, then would propose that his companion take the photo of them; hence the “posed” rather than “stolen” aspect of it. Marcel Thomas took these photos as an amateur and did not commercialize them, but he accumulated several thousand. Shortly before his death in August 2000, he bequeathed his photos to his friend, the writer Gérard Gagnepain, who he charged with making his collection known.
