Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) Coquastre Woven tapestry by Simone André, Felletin-Aubusson Origin: Parisian collection. 115 × 83 cm Important woven tapestry after Jean Lurçat, entitled Coquastre, executed by Simone André in Felletin-Aubusson, in a format of 115 × 83 cm. This emblematic composition deploys with force the entire plastic universe of the artist: an intense black background, vigorous drawing, vibrant chromaticity, and a symbolic language immediately recognizable. On this dark field stands out a fantastic and hieratic figure, built in bold flat areas of red, blue, ivory, ochres and greens, animated by a nerve-wracking graphic line of great intensity. The whole possesses that magistral presence unique to Lurçat, where decorative stylization, the strength of the sign, and the richness of the textile vocabulary unite in an image of great poetic tension. The present exemplar particularly appeals by the exceptional freshness of its condition: very bright colors, the material perfectly legible, no stains, very fine overall condition, with an intact bolduc preserved on the back. The artwork is signed within the composition on the front and also signed on the bolduc, which further enhances the quality and interest of this exemplar. Through its drawing, the density of its palette, and the quality of its weaving, this tapestry asserts itself as a foremost mural work, at once decorative, scholarly, and profoundly modern.
