Manuel Menan (1946-1994) - From the unnameable manner

This screen print by Manuel Menán from 1974, titled From the Unnameable Manner, presents a striking, almost surrealistic composition. At the center is a slender purple vase with a bright red flower, sharply defined against a nearly black background. In the background there are barely visible, enigmatic figures to be discerned, while the strongly perspectival, striped floor leads the eye toward the still life. The combination of a recognizable motif with an alienating environment gives the composition a mysterious, poetic atmosphere. The red rose appears more often in Menán's graphics and is connected in descriptions of his body of work with love and eternal life. Manuel Menán (Madrid, 1946–1994) was a Spanish graphic artist who spent a significant portion of his career outside Spain, including in the Netherlands. He studied in the early 1970s at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam and later taught printmaking techniques at that same academy and at Loyola University in New Orleans. Menán extensively experimented with graphic techniques such as etching, aquatint, silkscreen, and later also mixography; his prints often combine classical motifs with surreal and poetic elements. He was thus also called a 'poetic graphic artist'. His work was exhibited internationally and was represented in the Netherlands, among other places, in the print exhibition Grafiek 82.
