Another portrait of the same composition is in the collection of Abbot Hall, Kendal, Cumbria. George Clifford, 3rd Earl of Cumberland (15581605), was one of the most celebrated aristocrats of Elizabeth I's reign. Appointed the Queen’s Champion in 1590 and made a Knight of the Garter in 1592, he was renowned both for his prowess in the tournament and his later expeditions against Spanish interests. The present portrait is particularly significant for depicting Clifford in his celebrated Greenwich armour, made in 1586 under the direction of master armourer Jacob Halder. Its elaborate decoration incorporated Tudor roses, fleur-de-lys and Elizabeth I's cypher, visually proclaiming Clifford's royal allegiance. The armour survives at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and is considered a high point of the Greenwich workshops. Condition Report, Condition Report, Believed to be late 17th/ early 18th century.
