Magnificent Modern Ring with Diamonds & Lapis Lazuli, c. 2000

Not every piece of jewelry is created from completely new materials - on the contrary: in the goldsmith's trade, it is common to reuse valuable gemstones, gold, silver and platinum. For example, when new pieces of jewelry that are more in keeping with contemporary tastes are made from pieces that have become unfashionable. In the case of this ring from Zurich, another facet can be observed that we encounter again and again when dealing with old jewellery: the reinterpretation of old, possibly inherited elements or set pieces of antique jewelry, which are processed into a new, individual jewel. The ring is made from high-carat white gold. The goldsmith who created it did not skimp on the material - the piece of jewelry feels heavy and valuable in the hand. However, the starting point for the ring, which is set all over with diamonds, was a decorative element from around 1910 - perhaps the centerpiece of a brooch. This finely crafted platinum element, set with old-cut and rose-cut diamonds, now adorns the front of the ring. As it is openworked and designed with fine shadow gaps decorated with millegrains, the designer has placed a dark blue lapis lazuli under the ring face to effectively enhance the effect of reflection and shadowing. A strong ring band, which is set with small diamonds in the areas visible when worn, completes the ring. A total of around 1.50 ct of diamonds have been set. A successful reinterpretation of an antique set piece - and a goldsmith's work of outstanding craftsmanship!
