Somewhere over the Rainbow, at the other end of the rainbow, lies the land where the multicoloured opal is recovered: Australia. Its inhabitants affectionately call it "Oz," like the fairy-tale place from the musical "The Wizard of Oz," from which the song quoted at the beginning comes. It seems fitting, then, that it is precisely there that gems are recovered that exhibit all the colours of the rainbow. In the late 19th century, opals from the now legendary mines of Australia first reached Europe. The opal quickly developed into a true fashionable stone and is thus found on countless jewels of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Therefore, when we discovered this antique pendant, which had lost the original setting in its center over the generations, our choice was an opal. Our gem cutter cut the stone to fit the pendant. Thus, the opal complements the pendant quite beautifully not only historically but also aesthetically. The luxurious jewel is designed to be simple and pared down, yet finely crafted in detail. Its design with the surrounding meander band between two rows of fine diamonds of about 2.19 ct together reminded contemporaries of the art of classicism, which experienced a new fashion at the beginning of the 20th century. Precisely every detail is worked out in platinum, even the sides of the pendant are engraved by hand. In the center now shines and shimmers the large natural opal of 14.30 ct. Intense shades of green and peach glide across the surface one after another. But on the back, the gem is no less beautiful: here, a wild rose is engraved in gold amid volute-shaped vines. Worn, however, the floral engraving is solely the secret of its wearer. A hallmark shows that the pendant was imported to Paris after 1926. It is in very good condition. We have had a certificate made attesting to the quality of the materials used. It is delivered with the piece of jewellery.
