Luxurious Retro Style Brooch with Diamonds and Pearls in Gold, Vienna, c. 1950

Flower motifs have long been known as brooches. As early as the 18th century, Rococo court ladies adorned themselves with corsage ornaments in flower shapes, set with gemstones or sparkling glass. The Victorian era, the Belle Époque and Art Deco also adapted floral arrangements to the prevailing aesthetic. It is therefore not surprising to find the old theme here again in the style of the years around 1950. Typical of this so-called "retro style" of the mid-century period are the bodily designs in gold with diamond accents, as we see in this brooch. Shimmering pearls and seven large old-cut diamonds form the flowers. Leaves, stems and the surrounding band are made of warm, shiny gold. Only the diamonds are set in white gold. Despite the size of the brooch, it does not appear overly heavy, as the leaves are narrow and the stems are made of airy golden wires. And there is another thing that is typical of the period in which the brooch was created: the asymmetrical shape is a characteristic feature of the post-war period, as it was only then that the style of wearing brooches that we are most familiar with today became established: On the side under the shoulder, on a jacket or dress. Previously, brooches were often symmetrical, as they were intended to be worn in the middle of a corsage or on the collar of a blouse. According to the hallmark, the piece of jewellery was made in Vienna. An independent expert opinion has confirmed the quality of the materials used.
