Luisa Bruzzo (XIX) - Scena di genere

Important and fascinating oil painting on canvas executed in 1881 by the Italian painter Luisa Bruzzo, an artist active in Rome in the second half of the XIX century. The work magistrally fits into the famous and highly sought-after thread of Roman and Ciociaro genre painting, a subject that throughout the nineteenth century managed to enchant collectors from all over Europe and travelers of the Grand Tour. The painting depicts two young women caught in a moment of pause and conversation along a country path as they return from daily work. The attention to detail reflects the high academic training of the era: the left figure supports with innate elegance a water container on her head, balanced by the typical 'gregna' (the rolled cloth), and holds in her hands a red drapery containing field herbs. The companion carries an amphora in her arms. The traditional costumes — characterized by laced bodices and white shirts with ample puffed sleeves — are described with meticulous physiognomic precision in the faces and fabrics. Splendid is the atmospheric rendering of the background, where a Lazio hillside landscape, enriched by a small cottage in the distance, is enveloped by the warm golden and pink tones of a romantic sunset. The painting technique combines an analytical refinement in the figures with a freer and more vibrant brushstroke in the vegetation in the foreground. The painting is enhanced by a magnificent and solid contemporary gilded frame, which heightens the intrinsic luminosity of the canvas. An artwork signed and dated of excellent historical and collecting value and of the highest decorative impact. The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy and does not form an integral part of the work. Any damage to the frame will not be grounds for complaints or order cancellations.
