Lötz Witwe, Loetz - Vase - Variant 157 - Glass

Johann Loetz Witwe – Art Nouveau vase – 1915 Immediately after Michael Powolny’s success with striped decoration on seven models for the Cologne Werkbund exhibition in 1914, the factory began producing this popular decoration in other models and color variations. This decoration is known as Ausführung 157 and is characterized by a vertical line pattern in white or black on a solid colored opal glass. Also characteristic is that the vase edge was finished with a fine white or black rim. This vase was executed in transparent dark blue glass with white vertical stripes and a white vase rim. It is almost hard to believe that this decoration is more than 100 years old. It fits perfectly in a modern vintage interior. The vase is in very good condition with only minor signs of aging. Beautifully cut pontil. We note a small bakey defect in one of the white vertical stripes (see photo). The vase is 10.5 cm high and about 11 cm in diameter. Photos are part of the description. It will be carefully packed, insured and shipped to your home with a tracking code. We do not ship outside the EU and to (e)countries with a special customs status. Lötz/Loetz was founded in 1840 by Johann Lötz and was a company based in Bohemia that belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1879 a grandson of Lötz, Max Ritter-Von Spaun, took over the business from his grandmother and kept the name Joh. Lötz Witwe. From that moment, Johann Lötz Witwe really began to make a name for itself; they developed new innovative glass techniques, but also their design and vivid colors were entirely vernieuwend. They designed remarkable shapes and vases, luxury items, which they sold in luxury shops in Vienna, Berlin, Hamburg, Paris, London, Milan, Brussels and Madrid. It quickly made them very well known and famous. It was the period when Art Nouveau flourished. They used organic shapes, nature was their model, often the shapes were formed organically by bending the hot glass with a tong to form irregular shapes. Lötz participated in all kinds of World Expos, including the famous 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. They were rewarded with numerous prizes for their participation in World Expos. Their designs were to taste, also in the United States. They were able to produce iridescent glass. In short, Lötz had become a household name. And it still is. Lötz also worked closely with other glass manufacturers and with various artists, such as Josef Hoffmann, Koloman Moser and other artists of the Wiener Werkstätte. In the twenties, sleeker vases were produced, more in line with the Art Deco style of that era. Lötz existed until 1940; after a bombardment the factory burnt down completely. The glass of Lötz remains very popular and is collected worldwide, and their oeuvre can also be found in many museum collections.
