Leonor Fini was born in Buenos Aires in 1907, however, following her parents' separation, she moved with her mother to the Italian city of Trieste. Here, Fini would leave the house disguised as a boy, to prevent capture from her estranged father. This early experience of androgynous dressing sparked a fascination within Fini for costume, gender role reversal and sexual fluidity, themes that she would later explore throughout her art. Fini is recognised as one of the most fiercely independent artists of the 20th century. Although her work appeared frequently in surrealist exhibitions, she never considered herself a surrealist, preferring instead to define herself strictly on her own terms. Fini died in 1996 and, according to her obituary in The Independent, 'in the 17th century, Leonor Fini would have been burnt as a witch'. Although many of her works are classified as contemporary and surreal, the drawing in this sale reflects a quieter side to Fini’s practice. Delicately capturing some of her distinctive, intimate qualities, it sits on the opposite end of the spectrum from much of her more provocative and theatrical work. There is a small spot where the wash is slightly darker to the hair on the right side, and two further paler spots to the hair on the left side.
