The nine pre-production models produced by Krupp still had a rounded front (which gave the locomotive the nickname "Lollo"), which in series production was replaced by the angular shape that was easier and cheaper to manufacture. The V 160 was powered by a 1,900 hp 16-cylinder engine from Mercedes-Benz or Maybach. From 1964 the V 160s were built by Krupp, Henschel, KHD, Krauss-Maffei and MaK.
