COLLODI, Carlo (1826-1890). Le avventure di Pinocchio . Illustrated by Enrico Mazzanti. Florence: Felice Paggi, 1883. First edition in book form of Collodi's dark tale of the marionette Pinocchio, in original wrappers . Le avventure di Pinocchio first appeared serially in Giornale per i bambini beginning in July 1881. The story introduced readers to the mischievous wooden puppet and his adventures, misfortunes, and eventual moral transformation, and would go on to inspire countless translations, adaptations, and reinterpretations, the best-known being the much-softened 1940 Disney version. Interestingly, Collodi tried to conclude the serial version at Chapter 15, where Pinocchio is seized by the Fox and Cat, hanged from the branch of the Great Oak, and left to die. Following an outcry from his readership, Collodi was persuaded to continue the story, adding Chapters 16-36. Rare in the publisher's wrappers, with the last copy recorded in RBH in 2012 . Small octavo (180 x 115mm). 236 pp. and four pages of adverts at rear. Illustrations by Enrico Mazzanti. (A little foxing internally and to text block.) Original blue-green wrappers printed in black (a little spotting and rubbing, a few scuffs, spine very slightly faded).
