Large Jet-Black Volcanic Obsidian with High-Gloss Polish...

This imposing sculpture depicts a bison, entirely hand-carved from a massive block of black obsidian sourced from Mexico. It is a piece with great stage presence, melding the primordial beauty of volcanic glass with the symbolic strength of one of the most majestic animals. Its notable dimensions and the quality of the workmanship make it a collectible object and a striking decorative element. Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass, formed by the rapid cooling of silica-rich lava. Its main characteristic is the deep black color and the exceptionally glossy surface, almost mirror-like. Under light, the sculpture reveals intense, shifting reflections that enhance its forms, lending the work a sophisticated and mysterious elegance. The artisan’s skill is evident in the deft contrast between the different finishes. The body of the bison is polished to a mirror finish, creating smooth, bright surfaces that catch the light. In contrast, the mane, beard, and part of the coat have been worked with fine satin-incised details, realistically simulating the animal’s thick fur. This play of textures between shiny and matte adds depth, dynamism, and a notable tactile and visual realism. In the symbolism of many cultures, the bison is an icon of strength, endurance, fertility, and abundance. In this sculpture, the animal’s power merges with the geological nature of obsidian, a stone born from the Earth’s fire. The result is a unique piece that embodies a powerful, primordial energy, perfect for those who appreciate objects rich in meaning. A high-quality specimen, this sculpture is ideal for enriching a mineral collection, becoming the centerpiece of a contemporary Wunderkammer, or enhancing an interior design space. The uniqueness of the material, the finesse of the carving, and the strong visual impact make this obsidian bison a natural and artisanal artwork of great value."
