Blackpatinated Bronze Signed Gudmar Numbered EA I/IV Foundry stamp Coubertin H: 39.5 cm "La jeunesse" (The youth). Signed Gudmar. Numbered EA I/IV. Foundry stamp FC (Fonderie Coubertin) 2019. Dark patinated bronze, height 37.5 cm (including stone base 39.5 cm), length 16 cm (including stone base 18 cm), width 13 cm (including stone base 15 cm). Conceived in 1965. Insignificant surface dirt. Minor scattered scratch marks. Good condition. Gudmar Olovson began working on the sculpture "La jeunesse" in the mid-1960s. The model was his own wife Birgitta. During the course of the work, however, he realized that an addition in the form of a male model would make the sculpture complete. During the couple's first year in Paris, they got to know another couple their own age. The man in the relationship, Jean Paris, was the grandson of Paul Claudel who was the brother of the sculptor Camille Claudel. Jean Paris posed as a model and the work continued. When summer came, however, he had to return to his family home in Brangues outside Lyon and therefore invited Gudmar and Birgitta with him. They gladly accepted and thus traveled by train to Brangues, packing the incomplete sculpture. The Olovsons stayed in Brangues until the sculpture was finished and the result was a strikingly beautiful sculpture in plaster with a young Birgitta and Jean Paris as representatives of the ideals of youth.
