Fables, with Oudry’s illustrations published in the 1755 Desaint and Saillant edition, and Tales and Novellas in Verse, with Fragonard’s illustrations published in the 1795 Didot edition, by Jean de La Fontaine. Complete in 6 volumes: 4 volumes of fables and 2 volumes of tales. This edition brings together the two major poetic cycles of La Fontaine in their most famous eighteenth-century iconographic setting. The illustration of the Fables by Jean-Baptiste Oudry, begun in the 1730s and published in 1755 by Desaint et Saillant, resulted from nearly twenty years of work and stands as one of the summits of the illustrated book of the Enlightenment, combining precise naturalistic observation with Rococo decorative virtuosity. The illustration of the Tales by Fragonard, carried out in the 1780s but published only in 1795 by the printer Pierre Didot, remains one of the artist’s last great graphic undertakings and counts among the masterpieces of French illustration. In 1969, the publisher Jean de Bonnot, specialized in reissuing great illustrated classics for a bibliophile subscription clientele, revived these two cycles by faithfully reproducing the original engravings, thus giving a modern audience access to these two peaks of classical illustration gathered under a single uniform binding. Jean-Baptiste Oudry (1686-1755), trained with Nicolas de Largillière, became the most sought-after animal painter of his time, director of the Beauvais tapestry works and later inspector of the Gobelins, renowned for his game still lifes and royal hunting scenes; his work on the Fables remains his graphic masterpiece. Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), a pupil of Chardin and then of Boucher and a resident of the Académie de France in Rome, made his mark with gallant scenes of unmatched freedom and sensuality; his drawings for the Tales, with an unmistakable erotic elan, count among his most personal realizations. 6 volumes in octavo (14 x 21 cm), full leather, gilt-tooled with 22-carat gold, illustrated. Handmade wove rag paper with round shape, watermarked “aux canon(s).” Full natural leather binding aged to antique tone. Skived leather cut with a hand chisel, heads and corners creased by hand, ox bone inlay, upper edge gilt with fine gold, color-matched silk bookmark and headband. xci + 154, 166, 205, 258, lxix + 288, 418 pages. Good condition: some signs of rubbing on the corners and the lower margins.
