λ MARY ADSHEAD (BRITISH 1904-1995) RUNNING AWAY FROM THE FAIR Oil on canvas 218.5 x 102.5cm (86 x 40¼in.) Provenance: Commissioned by William Maxwell Aitken, first Lord Beaverbrook, in February 1928 Retained by the artist in August 1928 Sale, Sotheby’s Olympia, February 16, 2006, Running away from the Fair, lot 52 Exhibited: London, Peter Jones Department Store, An English Holiday, 1930 Literature: Paul Liss and Sasha Llewellyn (eds.), British Murals and Decorative Painting 1920-1960, Rediscoveries and New Interpretations, Samson & Co, 2013, pp. 179, 184 Lots 178, 180 and 181 were all part of a decorative scheme, An English Holiday, commissioned by Lord Beaverbrook in early 1928, to decorate his newly acquired Newmarket house, Calvin Lodge. As Ann Compton notes, each panel is a delightful, fully realised composition in its own right and collectively the mural depicts Beaverbrook’s friends, as well as Newmarket Life. (Paul Liss and Sasha Llewellyn (eds.), op. cit., p. 177). The scheme depicted Newmarket life, as well as scenes depicting his friends. However, just before completion, Beaverbrook changed his mind, deciding that some of his friends might be offended by the humorous scenes they were depicted in. For example, in lot 180 depicts Beaverbrook’s childhood friend, the financier, Sir James Dunn, inelegantly falling off his horse in front of Mrs Norman Holden, wife of a successful stockbroker. Whilst lot 181 has the notorious womanizer Lieutenant-Colonel Sir Mathew Wilson, galloping off with Raquel Miller, the Spanish singer and actress.
