Ida, Augustus John's first wife described Dorelia to her sister Ursula in 1905 as a very wonderful person - a child of nature - calm and beautiful and patient - no littleness - an animal if you will - but as wholesome as one - a lovely forest animal (James Holland-Hibbert and Rebecca John, Augustus John Master Works from Private Collections 1900-1920, 2004, p. 28). Dorelia (Dorothy) McNeill worked as a secretary in a solicitor's, but her real interest lay in art and she enrolled in night classes at Westminster School of Art. It was through this that she met Gwen John, at a party in 1903, who shortly afterwards, introduced Dorelia to her brother, Augustus. He was instantly captivated by her hypnotic beauty and sense of serenity, a powerful combination which enabled John to imagine and depict Dorelia in an almost endless variety of roles. Fellow artist and close friend, Sir William Rothenstein described how in the matchless Dorelia, in her dazzling beauty, now lyrical, now dramatic, John found constant inspiration. Over a sixty-year period, but most notably in the years between 1903 and 1914, when the present drawing was created, John sketched and painted Dorelia almost compulsively. Condition Report: Unexamined out of glazed frame. There are some scattered light spots of foxing predominately along the left hand edge side of the sheet. The sheet is slightly undulating in places.
