Kyoichi Sawada (Pulitzer Prize winner), 1970 Rare UPI press photo Vietnam War, Battle of Tonle Bet, Cambodia Vintage press photo (UPI Radiophoto) from 1970, captured by the legendary Japanese war photographer Kyoichi Sawada (Pulitzer Prize winner in 1966). The photo shows a poignant black-and-white image of Cambodian and South Vietnamese soldiers jointly evacuating an injured comrade on a stretcher to a medical aid post. The reverse bears the original typographic UPI caption, an official archive stamp from the Newspaper Enterprise Association (N.E.A.) dated June 2, 1970, and the original UPI stamp. The photo was taken on May 26, 1970 at Tonle Bet (Cambodia), a strategic junction on the Mekong River. The image documents the Cambodian campaign, in which Allied troops fought to retake the region from communist units. This is one of Sawada's late photo reports; he tragically died later that same year (October 1970) in Cambodia while at work.
