Kyōji Ogata (緒方恭二) - 2 Original page - Marubō Kabushiki...

Kyōji Ogata’s Marubō Kabushiki Gaisha brings the ambition and violence of the Japanese underworld into the framework of an expansive rise-to-power narrative. Adapted from Kazuya Fukumoto’s Bōryoku Kabushiki Gaisha fiction, with Kazuhiro Kasai credited for the adaptation, the manga follows Tokuichi Takarada, a gifted young man whose impoverished circumstances deny him conventional opportunities and lead him towards a career in organised crime. Serialised in Hōbunsha’s Weekly Manga Times, the series extended to 26 collected volumes and remains available in Japanese digital editions—a substantial publishing history for this sustained exploration of power, loyalty and social advancement. Identified as the interior title-page and contents-page illustrations for Volume 22, these two works were conceived to introduce the collected volume rather than form part of its sequential panel narrative. The colour composition illustrated here makes full use of that freedom. An imposing, blue-clad figure dominates the sheet, his turned head, narrowed eyes and emphatic brows establishing an immediate mood of confrontation. Three smaller, suited figures gather beneath and beside him, their contrasting poses and expressions transforming the image into a concentrated ensemble portrait. The work’s most distinctive feature is its colour orchestration. Deep blue defines the principal figure, while the smaller characters are divided into red and green-yellow groups. This selective palette gives each figure a separate visual identity without fragmenting the composition. The warm red at the lower left balances the cooler green passages at the right, while the dominant blue silhouette binds the arrangement together. White and pale-blue accents across the swept-back hair introduce a sharp gleam, reinforcing the portrait’s sculptural presence. Ogata combines this broad chromatic organisation with closely observed graphic detail. Pinstripes follow the folds of a jacket, hands tighten around weapons, and a loosened tie swings across the foreground. The diagonals of the blades counter the weight of the large portrait, generating tension within an otherwise compact arrangement. Particularly effective is the contrast between the principal figure’s controlled severity and the more openly threatening gestures below: the illustration suggests a hierarchy of personalities without needing dialogue or explanatory text. Stylistically, the image invites comparison with both Takao Saitō’s hard-edged crime imagery and the more polished, fashion-conscious action aesthetic associated with Tsukasa Hōjō. Here, that affinity is best understood through the drawing itself: forceful brows and compressed expressions coexist with elaborately styled hair, sharply tailored clothing and an elegant arrangement of overlapping figures. Rather than simply documenting the cast, Ogata stages it, turning an introductory illustration into a compelling statement of atmosphere. For a collector, the attraction of the pair lies in their specific editorial function: works created to frame the reader’s entrance into a volume. The illustrated sheet offers the self-contained impact of a display image, while its relationship to a companion contents-page illustration gives the lot a coherent place within the book’s visual presentation. It is an engaging example of the space afforded to colour and character design outside the more tightly regulated rhythm of sequential manga pages.
