KYOICHI SAWADA Vintage UPI Press Photo Vietnam War (1966) This impressive photo shows a heavily equipped American G.I. from the well-known 1st Cavalry Division during a patrol near Saigon. The back of the photo is bearing the original typed UPI caption slug and official stamps. Photographer: Kyoichi Sawada (United Press International) Date: November 29, 1966 Technique: Original black-and-white silver gelatin print (press photo) Condition: Good vintage condition with light signs of use commensurate with age (see photos for details). Back: Fully documented with the original UPI text strip ("WELL EQUIPPED") and archival stamps. The Importance of the Photographer: Kyoichi SawadaThe Japanese photographer Kyoichi Sawada (1936–1970) is worldwide regarded as one of the most prominent and courageous war photographers of the 20th century. In 1966 he won the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for his iconic photo 'Flee to Safety'. He was named World Press Photo of the Year twice in succession (1965 and 1966). Sawada was known for his empathetic gaze; he captured not only the action but especially the human impact and the psychological pressure on the soldiers. In 1970 he tragically lost his life while working in Cambodia. Photos by his hand are highly sought-after collectibles for museums and serious militaria or photography collectors. Historical Event & Context: The photo dates from November 1966, a crucial transitional year in the Vietnam War when the American armed forces were massively expanded. 1st Cavalry Division: This was the very first full 'Airmobile' division, deployed deep into enemy territory with helicopters (such as the iconic Huey). The photo is a perfect time document that symbolises the raw reality of the jungle war. On the soldier’s helmet, next to camouflage and the text 'Cavalry', a rosary of beads with a crucifix is visible—a powerful symbol of hope and fear at the front. His equipment is characteristic of the severe trials: a hand grenade within reach, a smoke grenade, and the spiral cable of a radio on his chest.
