Condition: Good condition: the impasto intact and the paint layer stable, unvarnished and unrestored in normal and ultraviolet light; the canvas unlined and probably re-stretched, the tacking margins worn and frayed with old nail heads and a small loss of canvas at the lower-left corner; a narrow strip of bare canvas beyond the paint along the left and top edges; light surface grime that would respond to cleaning. Konstantin Korovin returned again and again to this motif in his Paris years — flowers against the nocturnal city — and it became the signature subject of his late, exuberant manner. The canvas is painted at speed and with evident joy: the roses laid in with loaded, wet brushstrokes, the cloth and fruit in broad slabs of pink and ochre, the window frame and the night sketched in cool greys and ultramarine. Everything is about light — the way the flowers hold it against the dark, the way the city dissolves into it. Korovin, the great Russian Impressionist and stage designer, had settled in Paris in 1923, and signed his French-period works, as here, in Latin script: ‘C. Korovine’. The painting is offered unframed on its original stretcher.
