Koninklijke Verkade uit Zaandam

Extremely rare and museum-quality collectible: a fully complete, 5-piece antique "Bouilloir" cooking set from the well-known Dutch firm Verkade & Zn. of Zaandam. Where Verkade's later glass candle holders were purely meant to keep tea warm, this industrial travel stove was introduced from January 1910 as a powerful cooking device for travelers and campers. Thanks to the ingenious, patented system by designer Morris Fowler (the son-in-law of founder E.G. Verkade), liquids could actually be brought to a boil. With a compact diameter of 16 cm, a total height of 20 cm, and a weight of only 660 grams, this device was ideally designed for mobile use in the early 20th century. The set marks a beautiful transition between the graceful Art Nouveau (visible in the handles and the slender spout) and early industrial functionality. Particulars and unique features of this lot: • Patented burning ring: Fully marked on the underside with the original factory stamps: “Fa. E.G. Verkade & Zn. Zaandam – Waxine – PAT. No 19377-09”. The heavy cast-iron ribbed structure ensured optimal heat distribution. • Original 6-burner wax candle: The ring still contains the extremely rare, original thick antique wax candle with the authentic cotton wicks. This fragile component is almost never found in this condition. • Ingenious travel stove: The pan is equipped with a fixed carrying bracket, a sleek pouring spout, and a double handle at the rear that folds perfectly flat against the wall for compact transport and unfolds into a sturdy grip for safe pouring. • Original muffler cap: Including the rounded, perfectly fitting metal cap with a knob allowing all six flames to be extinguished in one motion airtight. An exceptionally well-preserved piece of Dutch industrial archaeology and cultural history.
