Tutte le aste / Mobili, Design & Specchi / Knoll - Harry Bertoia - Lounge chair - Diamond Chair - Steel, Textile

Harry Bertoia approached furniture design in a similar way to his sculptures: from material, space and the possibilities of metal. The Diamond Chair, designed for Knoll in 1952, emerged from his experiments with bent steel wire and grew into one of the most recognizable seating pieces of postwar American modernism. This exemplar, probably produced in the eighties, combines a black frame with a fully upholstered seat in a heathered blue Kvadrat fabric. Design Bertoia joined Knoll in Pennsylvania in 1950 at the invitation of Hans and Florence Knoll. Instead of a traditional furniture commission, he was given a great deal of freedom to experiment. From his research into welded steel wires, Bertoia developed a series of chairs in which the load-bearing structure and the seating shell fuse into a single form. The Diamond Chair was introduced in 1952 as part of this collection and has remained in production since. The wide, gently curved seating consists of a lattice of welded steel wires, from which the characteristic diamond shape emerges. From the side, the thin frame gives the chair a light, architectural profile, with generous proportions that ensure the comfort of a true lounge chair. Bertoia’s background as a sculptor is clearly visible here: volume is created by lines rather than closed planes, allowing the chair to occupy space without visually enclosing it. This exemplar has a black finished frame and a fully upholstered seat, instead of the smaller cushion that is often found with this model. The heathered blue Kvadrat fabric softens the geometry of the steel construction and gives the chair more visual weight. Kvadrat was founded in Denmark in 1968 and is known for its architectural furniture fabrics and pronounced use of color. The blue upholstery provides a calm contrast to the black frame, while preserving Bertoia’s recognizable silhouette under the upholstered shell. With a width of 84 cm and a low seat height of 42 cm, the chair has the relaxed proportions of a full-fledged lounge chair. It can be placed as an individual reading chair, but also works well beside more architectural furniture pieces, where the open frame provides an interesting contrast to heavier forms. More than seventy years after its introduction, the Diamond Chair remains closely tied to Bertoia’s exploration of the boundary between sculpture and furniture. This fully upholstered specimen offers a softer interpretation of the well-known wire construction and combines one of Knoll’s most famous designs with a restrained blue fabric. Condition The chair is in good vintage condition, with light signs of use appropriate to its age and use. Both the frame and the upholstery show a few minor marks, which do not detract from the chair’s appearance or functionality.
