Auction Lot of Rare Find: Set of 6 Tulip Chairs – Design Eero Saarinen – Original Knoll International Production (1970s) – Complete Restoration of Excellence We present in the auction a set of extraordinary collectible value and exceptional usability: 6 Tulip chairs, designed in 1955 by Eero Saarinen and produced by Knoll International in the 1970s. The lot consists of 5 swivel chairs and 1 fixed-base chair, subjected to a professional, comprehensive restoration that brings the entire set to a pristine, like-new conservational and aesthetic state. Design and History: The Solution to the “Knot of Legs” The Saarinen Pedestal collection stems from a precise formal and functional intuition: Formally and Sculpturally Transformative: Saarinen conceived the famous single central column to eliminate the visual clutter of traditional legs, creating a fluid silhouette inspired by the tulip’s bloom. Space Integration: The absence of perimeter bulk allows unparalleled freedom of movement and a rigorously elegant presence around the dining table. Lot Conditions: Complete Restoration and Perfect Conservational State - The entire set has undergone a high-level professional conservative and functional restoration: - Shells and Bases: The shells and aluminum cast bases have been fully stripped of paint and refinished in automotive lacquer, guaranteeing an impeccable, uniform surface free of any marks or yellowing. - Rotation Mechanism: For the 5 swivel pieces, rotation seals have been replaced, restoring fluid, silent, and perfectly stable movement. - New Kvadrat Upholstery (Salt & Pepper Mélange): The cushions have been fully reupholstered in a premium Kvadrat fabric with a salt-and-pepper mélange weave, delivering deep material richness, tactile elegance, and a perfect graphic contrast with the white shell. - Authenticity Guaranteed: The 1970s examples’ authenticity is confirmed by the Knoll era marks and logos stamped under the aluminum cast bases. Dimensions Width: 48 cm Depth: 45 cm Height: 81 cm Seat height: 48 cm The Designer: Eero Saarinen Eero Saarinen (1910–1961), Finnish-born American architect and designer, was one of the masters of Organic Modernism. Among his architectural masterpieces are the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and the TWA Terminal in New York, works united by the same sculptural pursuit applied to the Pedestal Collection for Knoll. The Manufacturer: Knoll International Founded in 1938 by Hans and Florence Knoll, the American company is a cornerstone of industrial design history. Knoll holds exclusive production rights to Saarinen’s projects, ensuring a consistently high quality and construction standard over time.
