Small painted Art Deco wooden box, signed M. Tomahle / M. Tomahlé (not clearly identified), with an old French department store label “Comptoir de Mercerie 59 – Prix 19 fr. 50.” The designation “Comptoir de Mercerie 59” points to a notions/sewing goods department or counter No. 59. A comparable historical record cites the same inscription in connection with “Grands Magasins aux Galeries Lafayette, Paris,” making a provenance from the Galeries Lafayette notions department plausible. Dating presumably around 1920–1940.
