Klaus Prior (1945) - Figura

Klaus Prior (*1945) – “Figura”, 2023 Autographed screen print in a limited edition A work of immediate impact – pared down, uncompromising, and entirely within Klaus Prior’s unmistakable visual world. Sometimes art does not need narrative details to dominate a space. “Figura” by Klaus Prior is one of those works. A powerful figure, focused on the essential, steps toward the viewer – archaic, expressive, and at the same time marked by remarkable graphic clarity. With few, decisive forms, Prior develops an image effect that does not exhaust itself at first glance. The figure seems born from an inner impulse: physically present, but not naturalistic; recognizably human, yet consciously condensed into its elemental form. It is precisely in this tension that the special quality of Prior’s art lies. The screen print on paper reinforces this effect. Clearly separated planes, bold contours, and the deliberate reduction of form give the sheet a almost plakative presence. At the same time there remains room for interpretation. The viewer encounters no fixed story – rather a figure that carries something primal, immediate, and almost timeless within itself. Prior’s artistic path makes this work particularly interesting. Born in 1945 in Wesel, he moved to Switzerland in the mid-1960s and studied painting at the St. Gallen School of Applied Arts from 1967. For decades he has been developing his own stance between painting, drawing, and sculpture. His artistic spectrum ranges from works on paper and canvas to monumental wood sculptures and plaster works. His engagement with the human figure runs like a red thread through his work. Particularly characteristic is the artist’s immediate working method: not the academic construction of a figure, but the spontaneous, concentrated translation of an inner impression into a concise form. This gives his figures a peculiar tension between instinct, movement, and compression. That Prior has long held a fixed place in the contemporary art landscape is also shown outside the private art market. His works are, among others, in the Kunstmuseum Singen, the Städtische Museum Wesel, in collections of the Canton of Ticino, and in numerous municipal, institutional, and private collections in Germany and Switzerland. The Kunstmuseum Singen explicitly includes Prior in its collection of contemporary art. His exhibition history is also remarkable: from presentations in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy to stops in Belgium, the USA, and other international art contexts. In recent years Prior has been present, among others, at the Ulm Art Association, the New Castle Kißlegg, the Lorenzkapelle Art Collection in Rottweil, and at international sculpture exhibitions. “Figura” thus combines two special aspects: on the one hand the unmistakable handwriting of a artist established for decades, and on the other the immediate accessibility of an exceptionally effective sheet. The format of about 60 × 45 cm makes the work both present and versatile to place – as an independent eye-catcher or as part of a demanding collection of contemporary works on paper. A particularly appealing aspect for collectors is the edition of only 30 copies. The presented sheet is hand-signed and dates from 2023 – thus from a late, still active creative phase of the artist. Work data Artist: Klaus Prior (*1945, Wesel) Title: “Figura” Year: 2023 Technique: Screen print Material: Paper Sheet size: approx. 60 × 45 cm Signature: hand-signed Edition: 30 copies A powerful sheet for connoisseurs and explorers “Figura” is not a decorative artwork that merely blends into a room. The work demands attention – and keeps it. Its reduced figure, the decisive form, and the characteristic expressivity make this screen print a striking example of Klaus Prior’s independent visual language. An extraordinary sheet by an established German-Swiss artist – powerful, with a strong character, and limited to only 30 copies.
