Kirtland, Ohio. Kirtland Safety Society Bank. 1837 $5. PCGS Banknote Fine 12 Details. Edge and Internal Splits. No. 1387. Plate A. Kirtland, Ohio was the headquarters of the Mormon church in 1831. In 1836 the Mormons decided to open a bank led by Joseph Smith and other church members in late 1836. They were rejected of a bank charter by Ohio banking authorities, however they still issued notes starting in January of 1837. May of 1837 the bank refused to redeem these notes and by June of 1837 Smith ended his association with the bank. The bank would fail by November of 1837. This example is evenly worn but with still boldly printed inks and strong signatures. PCGS Banknote comments "Edge and Internal Splits." Estimate: $1,000 - $2,000.
