Kings of Macedonia

Ancient Greek. Kings of Macedon, Alexander III 'the Great' (336-323 BC). Drachm (Silver, 18 mm, 3.52 g). Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ. Zeus Aëtophoros seated left on throne, holding eagle in his extended right hand and long sceptre in his left. Reference: Hoover, Handbook of Coins of Macedon and Its Neighbors, Part I: Macedon, Illyria, and Epeiros, 914. Alexander III “the Great” transformed Macedon into the center of a vast empire stretching from Greece and Egypt to Central Asia and India. His widely accepted coinage, typically featuring Herakles and Zeus, became an international currency of the Hellenistic world. After his death, successor kings and cities continued striking these familiar types in Alexander’s name for generations.
