Kings of Macedonia. Demetrios I Poliorketes (306-283 BC). Æ (No reserve price)

Kings of Macedonia. Demetrios I Poliorketes (306-283 BC). Æ (Bronze, 17.1 mm, 2.4 g). Obv: Helmeted head of Athena right. Rev: BA. Prow right; labrys (double axe) to right, AP monogram below. Reference: Hoover, Handbook of Coins of Macedon and Its Neighbors, 1026b. Demetrios, son of Antigonos I, won the naval battle of Salamis in Cyprus in 306 BC, after which his father took the royal title and shared it with him; the prow on this type recalls that sea power. His failed siege of Rhodes earned him the epithet Poliorketes, the Besieger. After the defeat at Ipsos in 301 he seized the Macedonian throne in 294, but in 288 Pyrrhos and Lysimachos drove him out, and he died a captive of Seleukos in 283.
