Kimbei Kusakabe - Marriage & Weaving Silk - Deux tirages...

Kimbei Kusakabe, two albumen prints from the period enhanced with watercolor, circa 1885: 64. Marriage Traditional scene illustrating a Japanese wedding, probably during the sake ceremony known as san-san-kudo. This custom symbolizes the union and commitment of the spouses, in the presence of close family. The elegance of the kimonos and the refined interior arrangement make it a scene of great documentary and aesthetic richness. 66. Weaving Silk Ethnographic photograph depicting two Japanese women in a silk spinning workshop. One operates the loom while the other supervises the work. This scene bears witness to a precious artisanal know-how, emblematic of Meiji-era Japan, and to an economic reality dominated by the textile industry. Kusakabe Kimbei (1841-1934) was a colorist and assistant to Felice Beato and Baron Raimond von Stillfried before opening his own studio in Yokohama in 1881. Around 1885, he bought back the negatives of Beato and Stillfried. Kimbei immortalized, at the end of the 19th century, numerous scenes of Japanese life. The prints, which he hand-colors, are then sold to Western travelers passing through Japan. Condition: Prints mounted on cardboard, front and back. See photos for more details. Number of pages: 2 pages Very careful shipment in a rigid and waterproof carton.
