A Rarity from Alaska Ketchikan, Alaska. $5 1929 Ty. 1. Fr. 1800-1. First NB. Charter #12578. PMG Very Fine 20. Issued by one of the three note-issuing banks active in Alaska before 1935, this evenly circulated, but imperfect T1 $5 represents an obligation of the First National Bank of Ketchikan (Charter# 12578) which surprisingly still operates in 2026. Unrecorded at present by the National Bank Note Census, this example will nonetheless prove to be a welcome addition to a population of 39 non-institutional notes that may seem unremarkable before one accounts for the innate allure of National Bank Notes from Alaska. Should one seek to build a set of Nationals representative of the entire United States, Alaska is essentially the silent immovable guardian that stands between a collector and that goal as barely more than 150 notes are recorded on the "The Last Frontier." This held together with uncommon demand that has the tendency to price out many collectors, this honest survivor is decidedly more accessible relative to most of its fellow survivors which makes this a truly rare opportunity to be had especially at our current estimate which could very well still be surpassed.
