This is a high-quality framed, contemporary luxury reproduction (facsimile) on original Washi or rice paper of the artwork (woodcut) by the legendary Japanese artist Kanō Eitoku from the Momoyama period (late 16th century) This specific design is directly based on his famous masterwork Karashishi-zu folding screen (Screen with mythological lions). Features of the image: • The Karashishi: The lions are depicted in a stylized manner with the characteristic curled manes, powerful claws and expressive, wide-open eyes. • Styling: The composition is placed in a round form (uchiwa or mirror shape) and surrounded by traditional stylized cloud patterns (kumo). • Symbolism: In both Chinese and Japanese culture these mythological beings symbolize strength, courage and spiritual protection. They have traditionally been placed at the entrance of temples and palaces to ward off evil spirits. Age and origin of the print are unknown. It is beautifully framed in a gold-colored wooden frame with a wine-red fabric mat. The diameter of the image inside the black circle is 37 centimeters
