Kappie was the first caption-strip by Marten Toonder to appear in the newspaper after World War II. The very first story was, still in the year of liberation, written and drawn by Marten Toonder himself. Kappie was based on Marten Toonder Sr., the father of Marten and Jan Gerhard Toonder. Ultimately, between 1945 and 1972 no fewer than 141 Kappie stories were produced, published in daily installments in more than one hundred newspapers in the Netherlands and Belgium, and the stories were published all over the world. Besides Marten Toonder himself, top illustrators and scriptwriters from the Toonder Studios contributed, including Piet Wijn, Frits Godhelp, Fred Julsing, Jan van Haasteren, and Lo Hartog van Banda. In its heyday, at the end of the fifties, Kappie eclipsed the other Toonder strips in popularity. Kappie was everywhere: alongside many national and regional newspapers and magazines you saw him in advertising and in countless merchandising items. In 2023 a book appeared; in this large Kappie book you can find everything about the Kappie strip. An extensive story overview, publication data, articles about themes and language use, information about everyone who contributed to the Kappie strip, Kappie in advertising, Kappie as an international success, and much more! Supplemented with Kappie balloon strips never before published in book form. An indispensable reference work for all Toonder enthusiasts. Three editions of the book have appeared; 1) the regular edition. 2) the contributors’ edition, only provided to people who made a larger contribution to the realization of this book. This edition appeared in a print run of only 30 numbered copies. This edition includes a similarly numbered facsimile print of the very first pencil drawings of Kappie and other figures. These drawings were recently discovered, and their publication almost 80 years later allows many enthusiasts to witness the birth of Kappie…. 3) the “RvU edition” in a print run of only 60 numbered copies. This edition has a different color cover and spine, a different image on the front and back, and also differs markedly in layout from the two editions mentioned earlier. Moreover, there are 2 equally numbered prints; A) a numbered facsimile print (reproduction) of the original drawing used for the cover of Cartoonder (1952) B) a numbered facsimile print of a never-published painting from the Toonder Studios showing all main characters from the Tom Poes, Kappie, Panda and Hollewijn strips celebrating a party in the castle garden of Bommelstein.
